File Folder Activities for Assessment, Independent Work, and more

Manila file folders are an inexpensive office supply with a wide variety of uses! File folder activities are a classic staple in ASD and DCD classrooms. A basic file folder activity consists of laminated sheets attached to the insides of the folder and Velcro-backed pieces that students use to match or sort. The best thing about these activities is that they can be reused over and over for as long as the materials hold up.

I inherited a collection of file folder activities when I started teaching in my current classroom. A quick Google search will lead to thousands of sources for templates, such as TPT. You can also purchase pre-made activities from Amazon, Etsy, and even Lakeshore. However, I discovered that these activities weren't too difficult to make myself!

On ASDLittles.com, I am building a database of file folder activities that I've made using Canva. Each will come with an instruction page and printable labels.

How to Assemble File Folder Activities

  1. Print out all pages of the activity. If you are using my templates with sticker labels, print out the last 2 pages on label paper compatible with Avery 22805.
  2. Cut and laminate all parts of the activity. You can choose to laminate the entire manila folder if you have that capability with a large laminator or menu size laminating sheets.
  3. Attach the background pages to the insides of the manila folder using staples, glue, or tape. (if it's not already laminated onto the folder as above)
  4. Attach soft Velcro to the answer spots on the background pages.
  5. Attach hard Velcro to the back of the answer pieces.
  6. Attach labels to the outside and tab if desired.
  7. At this point you can decide if you want to store the answer pieces in a baggie or just keep them attached to the answer spots when not in use.
